Rekeying or replacing: which one do you need?

Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so it needs a new key. The old keys stop working, and you keep the lock you already have. It's usually the cheaper option and works well when the locks are in good condition.

Replacing swaps the whole lock for a new one. It's the better choice when locks are old, worn, damaged or low security, or when you want an upgrade such as a deadlock or a smart lock.

When to change or rekey your locks

  • You've just bought or moved into a home. You don't know how many keys the previous owners, builders or tradies still have.
  • Keys have been lost or stolen, especially if your address was with them.
  • A tenant has moved out or a relationship has ended.
  • A lock is sticking, loose or hard to turn.
  • You want one key for every door. Locks can often be keyed alike so one key opens the front, back and garage.

Rental properties

Victorian rental rules require properties to meet minimum standards, including working locks on external doors and windows. Landlords and property managers often rekey between tenants. If you manage rentals on the Peninsula, call to talk about regular work.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?

Usually, yes, because you keep the existing lock body. If the lock is worn or low quality, new locks may be better value over time.

Can all my doors use the same key?

Often, yes, if the locks are compatible. This is called keying alike. Ask when you call and mention which doors you'd like on one key.

How long does rekeying take?

A standard house lock is usually quick to rekey. The total time depends on how many locks you have.

Can you change locks on sliding doors and windows?

Many sliding door and window locks can be replaced or upgraded. Describe them when you call, or send a photo if you request a callback.
